Blog Prompt #2: The Contemporary Public Sphere
Over the years public spheres have definitely changed solely because of technology. I do believe that online platforms like, Facebook, Twitter, and blogs are functioning as public spheres, which could mean both good and bad for the public as a whole.
Technology has become so easy to access that the public would rather voice their opinions and concerns via social media, not to mention that sitting behind a screen makes it a lot easier to get your point across compared to sitting in a room full of people. But this could cause problems with social interaction throughout the world because with a screen in one's way, the less likely someone will have to deal with a problem head on. The screen will act as their safely net for when issues get heated and the ability to solve and deal with conflict greatly decreases.
On the other hand though, having the ability to use social media as a public sphere allows everyone to be involved, in a way, because the online platforms become universal and race, gender, and ethnicity become nonexistent. Online platforms create more diversity within a conversation, which allows a variety of opinions and concerns to be expressed. You can't lock the door to social media, everyone has access and the means to insert their opinions.
