Blog Prompt #3: Leading Public Intellectuals
Just a couple public intellectuals that I believe to be significant these days...
Les Brown is considered to be the world's greatest motivational speaker and I believe that he is a note-worthy public intellectual because he has taught people to follow their dreams no matter how big they seem. There are countless times where he reiterates the phrase, "it's possible." His goal is to emphasize on the need to seek solutions, rather than ponder over the problems. If you set your mind to it, anything is possible. Another reason why I believe Les Brown is a significant public intellectual is because by being an African American male, greater significance and power is added to his position as a public intellectual because most believe significant public intellectuals are white males who come from a long line of success. He is the unexpected that people want in today's world.
My next public intellectual that I consider to be very significant has already been mentioned by a classmate, but I agree with her in saying that Malala Yousafzai is very note-worthy.
Malala Yousafzai became an advocate for girls' education at a very young age and because of this, she was issued many death treats. One day she was shot in the head on the way home from school. She survived and became even stronger. She took a stance for girl's education and continued to speak out against the importance of education. She is the youngest person to have received a Noble Peace Prize. Malala Yousafzai is proof that no matter how hard you get knocked down, it is possible to get back up and fight for what you believe in. At only 19 years old, Malala Yousafzai is one of the greatest inspirations in my life. She's a fighter for what she believes in and doesn't let anyone or anything, even a bullet, get in her way of changing the world.
